No Love For Wall Street Willie In Texas

Willard Mitt Romney (aka Wall Street Willie) may have won the Florida Republican primary, but it is doubtful that he can do so anywhere else in the South. Most Southern States are much more like South Carolina than Florida, which does not bode well for Romney. And whether you consider Texas a part of the South or the West (a case can be made for both), the same is true of the Lone Star State.

According to a recent poll, Romney gets no love from Texas Republicans. In fact, he only finishes in third place. Here are the latest poll numbers for Texas (taken February 8th though 15th):

TEXAS TRIBUNE/UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS POLL
Rick Santorum...............45%
Newt Gingrich...............18%
Mitt Romney...............16%
Ron Paul....... ...

A Brokered Republican Convention?

(Picture above is of the 1952 Republican National Convention.)

Just a few months ago, the idea of no candidate having a majority of the delegates as the Republican National Convention opened was a ridiculous thought. The conventional wisdom was that the nominee would be Mitt Romney, and all he had to do was go through the first few states to wrap up the nomination. But that didn't happen. The Romney record in the first states has been spotty at best, and the political pundits vastly underestimated the perseverance and depth of the anti-Romney movement in the Republican base.

Romney could still stage a comeback and win the required number of delegates before the national convention, but recent events have made it more likely that . ...

Rick Santorum signals the declining relevance of the Tea Party

Rick Santorum's recent rise to the number one contender spot versus perennial front-runner Mitt Romney has frequently been described as simply being the last in line of a long list of not-Romney flavor of the months. As in, there is nothing particularly special or meaningful in his recent and likely transient rise. However, this fits into a larger pattern; namely, the decline of the Tea Party as a relevant operating force within the Republican party and a turn to the long running, conventional establishment vs. evangelical schism within the Republican party. As an archetypal member of that latter category, Rick Santorum may thus have more staying power than his predecessors.

In 2010, the political story of the year was the Tea ...

Wall Street Willie Still Losing Ground

I have posted several times in the last few days about Willard Mitt Romney's (aka Wall Street Willie) problems in Michigan -- the state he grew up in. At least five polls are now showing that Rick Santorum has taken the lead in that state. Romney and his super-PAC are starting to spend big in Michigan, hoping to turn things around like they did in Florida-- but they need to act fast, because there are only 10 days left until Michigan votes on February 28th.

And Michigan is not Wall Street Willie's only problem. The latest poll out of Arizona (which also votes on February 28th) shows Santorum is surging in that state also. Only a couple of weeks ago, Romney had a 24 point lead in Arizona. Santorum has now whittled that down to 8 ...

Congressional Republicans Believe Women Shouldn't Have Any Say On Contraception

In their effort to appease social conservatives, who make up a large portion of their party's base of voters, congressional Republicans have long tried to keep women in a second-class status in our society. They have opposed equal pay for women and also opposed allowing women to have the right to make decisions regarding their own bodies. Now they are expanding the list of things in which they believe women should have no say to include contraception.

The House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California), is currently considering a bill to overturn President Obama's decision to provide free and easy access to contraceptives to all American women. The picture above shows the people allowed to testify before this ...

Does Obama have 2012 locked up?

The Signal, Yahoo's under-the-radar political data-analysis blog, a lower-level comparison to Nate Silver's 58 blog at the New York Times, pretty much makes that claim.

Two of its writers claim that, as of right now, he would win 303 electoral votes. Now, in the sense that's tighter than in 2008, he's got nothing locked up.

But, in the sense the economy's still struggling, and could get better, while at the same time, whoever the eventual GOP nominee is has left a huge video trail to exploit, "locked up" might not overstate the case too much.

Here's a few major takeaways.
1. Florida ever so slightly tilts GOP this time, compared to 2008;
2. Virginia is still in Obama's camp, barely, and so is New Hampshire;
3. Just like the ...
