How Republican economics work out

I think everybody knows Texas is being afflicted by massive wildfires.  Well, it turns out that due to budget cuts by Governor Perry, firefighters have to spend their own money to buy needed fuel and equipment.

This is so wrong.  These people are risking their lives to protect the property and people of the State of Texas, and by extension America.  Republicans keep moaning about government spending, and want to privatize everything, but the simple fact remains that some things are better done by government.

And dare I say Deja vu?  When America invaded Iraq, quite a few US troops lacked proper equipment, and paid for it out of their pocket.  All this support the troops talk was just BS coming from Republican mouths.

In any case, this ...

Libya, Curiouser and curiouser

I have always had a difficult time understanding the NATO intervention in Libya.  The reason, because I had always thought that Qaddafhi had made nice-nice with the West.  Promised to be good and all that.

But now it turns out that The CIA had extensive links with Qaddahfi's regime.  So why the NATO strikes against Qaddafhi?  Perhaps a belief that in no way he could hang on, and an effort to come out on the good guy's side.

OK, well in my opinion the odds that the new guys are going to be good guys is slim.  Still the same kind of people.  They have no experience with Democracy as practiced in Peoria.

And so far, statements about oil sales are showing no inclination at favoring the West.  Of course, one does not know what is going on ...

Right Wing Christianity, the New American Fascism

There have been a few posts about Right wing Christian Presidential candidates recently.  For example, saying that their religious beliefs should be put under the microscope if they are running for President.

How correct that premise is.  I am a regular reader of Right Wing Watch and God's own party.

So let me give you a rundown of certain beliefs that Right Christians, and this includes Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann, share.  First of all, Gays.  The Right wing Christian movement is still divided over whether Gays should be executed outright, so some attempt to "cure" them of being Gay should be made.  It seems that there are a few Gay members on this forum, well they could be in trouble.

Well, ...

Thoughts on America and Its Future

Several people on this blog posted comments on my Independence Day post, and here is mine.  In reply to some of the posts, I wrote that the idea and concept of America is Exceptional, however the actual America is fair to Middling.

I mean it.  And I think it is time for people living in America to realize that the promise that idea and concept of America is almost gone.

Here is a link from my friend Leah Burton's site.  She specializes in exposing Christian Dominionism.  In the link she gives two sets of writing from people who have escaped from Dominionist churches, one is descriptive of America now, the other describes America in a few years.

OK, what exactly am I talking about?  Again I will link ...

Rewriting History: Deeply Disturbing Stupidity

A few weeks ago, an event happened that deeply disturbed me as to the present state of America.

Sarah Palin was out on her bus tour, that isn't a Presidential campaign, of American historical sites.  During an interview while visiting Paul Revere's house in Boston, Sarah as usual made a fool of herself and showed her ignorance of American history.

She went on and on talking about Paul Revere ringing bells, firing guns, and warning the British not to take American guns.  OK, I am no longer surprised when Sarah displays her ignorance and stupidity.

What got to me was the actions of her supporters.  They attempted to change the Wikipedia page on Paul Revere, to try to make what Sarah said correct.

Here is a ...

An American Civics test

Try this, it is interesting.  How much do you know about the US Government?  I got 84.85%. ...

Killing Osama bin Laden, the flip side.

I will now, some six weeks after the event, comment on the killing of Osama bin Laden.  First of all, I was very surprised at the total violation of Pakistani sovereignty.

Predictably, it has caused a significant tilt towards China by Pakistan.

Relations had already been strained by the killing of two Pakistani's by a US CIA officer in January.

In any case, 6 in 10 Pakistan's view America as an enemy country.

In fact, anti-Americanism is TAUGHT in the Pakistani Army.

In that link, Americans make a lot of comments that this is simply a PR problem.  We should present alternative views of America.  Or, we should let Pakistani officers visit America.

I think the problem has a lot more to do with the constant ...

Government Insults 9/11 Heros

I am having a real problem wrapping my head around this.  To get treatment for health problems incurred while being a first responder at 9/11, these heros will have to go through FBI terrorism checks.

I rarely use the word hero.  But this time I think it qualifies.  These people had no idea what they were getting into, except that it was very very bad.  Yet they did not hesitate.  I was in Tokyo at the time, but non the less I feel a deep appreciation for their effort.

And to insult them like this?  Are people in Homeland security or the FBI mad?

And another thing.  I am a former intelligence person with the United States Naval Intelligence back at the end of Vietnam.  I was taught not to waste .. ...

Is Fukushima Really a Level 7? I don't think so.

I sit here today in Tokyo with a heavy heart.  After the earthquake, tsunami, And Fukushima nuclear plant troubles, Japan has suffered a fourth disaster. The Japanese nuclear watchdog agency announced today that the Fukushima problem is a Level 7 event, not a Level 5 as previously stated by the Japanese government. That's the same level given to Chernobyl.

However, Chernobyl released 10 times the amount of radiation.

So why this declaration?  I was listening to several interviews on the news in Tokyo, and I think I have the answer.  One common theme struck me.  Several people being interviewed, university professors and so forth, remarked on on the foreign press comments soon after the disaster happened.

Now I have ...

Week 3: Continuing Live Coverage From Japan: Political Fallout Over Size of the Safety Zone

[Dramatic before and after images here.] ["One week of sorrow" photo essay by Doug Parker]

March 31, Are domestic Japanese politics showing up in the nuclear contamination issue?

I just got another juicy tidbit from my wife.  The uniforms in the photo above are work uniforms.  Japanese factory workers always have a uniform.  Of course so do nuclear plant workers.  Including management.  The rumor on the net is that these uniforms were custom ordered so that the government could look good for the cameras.  Hmmmmm. See last comment for fuller discussion.

March 30,

Progress is being made. However, I will revive for one last time, my dolt of the disaster award, and this time for Mr. Shimizu, the ...
