FDR, LBJ . . . BHO?
As you watch the value of your 401K shrink before your eyes today, make yourself feel a wee bit better reading Rick Perlstein, who suggests that Barack Obama, if he can manage to win the election, might have a legislative opening similar to FDR’s in 1932 and LBJ’s in 1964—crises to deal with, public support for change, and large-enough legislative majorities to make it happen.
If he can manage to win the election.
(Digby discusses the same general topic, and links to Perlstein, which is how I found it.)
In a related development, nation’s-future-at-stakewise, in an interview clip not released by CBS, Katie Couric asked Sarah Palin to discuss Supreme Court cases other than Roe v. Wade, Palin’s response was dead silence. Yup. She couldn’t name another one.
Jeez, not even Brown v. Board of Education? Imagine: In a year or so, she might be able to say she’s gone from being unable to name more than one Supreme Court case to appointing justices to the Supreme Court.

Nor Dred Scott. Bush v Gore? Plessy v Ferguson? Griswold? How about Miranda? That’s on teevee all the time.

The only catch that I see is where is the money coming from. When I was a Senate staffer in the LBJ days, bills would be introduced with language that said, “and such sums shall be added as demeaned necessary.” LBJ had a blank check, and for different reasons, so did FDR.
Number 44 is going to be handcuffed. But hope springs eternal.
