My two favorite pieces of commentary on the debate are the video of Frank Luntz working with his Las Vegas focus group  and Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight.com analysis of the internals of the CNN uncommitted voter poll conducted just after the debate concluded. Both confirmed for me something I’ve been thinking about for several weeks now, the possibility that American voters are bone tired of the “gotta fight, gotta fight” mindset that infects so many commentators left and right. Could it be that people are unhappy with what the “gotta fight” cowboy politics of the last eight years have brought us? Could it be that strong, civil and connected now beats kick-ass posturing? It would sure be nice to think so.

Thanks for posting the Luntz focus group piece. Very well done and a very interesting use of technology. And I agree that by seeing both guys side-by-side, the differences between old style and new style was clear, the differences between old substance that is tired and worn and new substance that is fresh and thoughtful was also clear.

It doesn’t really matter what the pundits think. I was watching MSNBC, the post debate commentariat could not really focus on what was said, but chose to focus essentially what the spinners from the McCain camp were saying. The main article in this mornings local paper came from the NYT and, at least to me, did not at all describe what I actually saw last nite.ASIDE; I have been a juror in 4 federal drug cases(this is actually going somewhere, really) and what I learned from being a juror in federal court is that you can not trust eyewitness testimony. No 2 people see the same event the same way. You can actually have a conversation recorded, the jury will listen to it, yet some of the jurors will insist that they heard things that were not said. Back to my point. What I heard last nite and read this am does not in any way conform to what I saw and heard. My wife pretty much agreed with me on what the various village people had to say, which all in all was pretty shameless.
One thing tho, I think that the press/McCain honeymoon is over as several said that McCain showed contempt to Obama, and a few(including tweety-big surprise there) said that he treated the press the same way-this was said like it was a revelation not something that had been known for some time-Letterman continues his mounting anger crusade with McCain in every program. Boy he is still really really pissed.
