More Than Talk: Getting Down to Brass Tacks

Great stuff last night, most of it missed by the pun-nots: Jay Rockefeller pouncing on McCain for not seeing the complextity of terrorism and calling his failure to change courses a disgrace, Harry Reid noting that except for the Clintons years there has been an oil man in the White House or VP House for the past 28 years and “Doc” McCain is a snake oil salesman, Congressman and Iraqi vet Patrick Murphy standing with members of his troop, noting that Bush/McCain had billions for private sole-source contracts, but not enough money to properly arm the soldiers, or Tom Daschle noting that between Cheney, Bush and Rumsfield there is 100 years of experience and look where that has led this country.

Now the Obama campaign is coming out with the heavier ads, the encore to the speeches. It’s a start. I expect to see more, especially after Kerry publicly called Rove tactics out. It’s a start.

The ad I would like to see is simple and powerful and easy to picture and easier to remember. It picks up on what Joe Biden and others pointed out last night: John McCain has voted against raising the minimum wage, not once, not twice, but 19 times. The ad should be stark black and white, ask the question “How many times did John McCain vote against raising the minimum wage?, with a visual count up to 19, accompanied by a voice-over count. Ending with something like this: There is only one candidate in this race who has voted for the minimum wage every chance he could, and that is Barack Obama. John McCain can not be trusted to support working families and caring about those struggling to make ends meet. I’m Barack Obama and I definitely approve this important message.

Obama said we needed more troops in Afghanistan, we need a timeline for withdrawing our troops from Iraq, and we need to negotiate with Iran. On all of these subjects, Biden kept repeating “Obama was right and McCain was wrong!” I would like to see something like that made into an ad.

Josh, great idea. Too bad it will never happen. Question. I have been wondering about this for quite a while. Why is the dem convention always before the repig one? Why do dems never counter punch the repigs? Why do the dems let the repigs identify them? Also, have you noticed just how unbalanced and unfair the MSM is when reporting/analyanalyzing about the dems? they continue to use the repig talking points. BTW, while watching TDS last nite they had a segment where some of the hosts on MSNBC suffered a total meltdown. Chris Matthews and Morning Joe were the worst, but it sure was fun watching them. Be funny if the MSNBC people stayed outside during the repig convention and got rained on.
