The Race “Card”
The Race “Card”
by Sasha
As has occured in the past, we find the common media and even everyday folks using phrases like “the race card,” as if a discussion of race in the current campaign were not a serious matter. Use of the “card” construction just pisses me off beyond belief. It is a way of dismissing the discussion, calling it just a game, and then claiming in a passive-aggressive way that they didn’t do a thing.
No, Obama didn’t “play the race card.” He made a statement about race, one that was relevant and on point. The McCain folks are trying to take away Obama’s ability to discuss race while they use it behind the scenes. And Obama gets to call them on it, hard and often.

Sasha, While reading a long article in my Sunday paper about how Obama is only going to go with 3 debates, none of them in the “town hall” style, this comment kind of jumped off the page at me. From Obama’s campaign-He has decided to “PLAY IT SAFE”. WTF is this! Play it safe? Sounds very much like the dem pro’s have managed to worm their way into this campaign. Play it safe. Riiiighht! That is just what Obama needs to do. Never mind that the repigs are going all out negative in order to define him-just like they did to Kerry and Gore-he is going to play it safe. Prepare to be Shrumed. This is exactly how the dems have managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory over most of the years since Reagan. Come on now, “play it safe” is the way you play to lose. Obama should know that because every sports team that decided to “play it safe” lost. Playing to protect a lead is stupid. Forget “play it safe” instead try “play to win”. And this is a big reason why the dem party loses so damn much. They think-still more than 90 days before the election- that they have already won. JESUS H CHRIST why are the dems so damn stupid?

I don’t know why they are stupid. I do know, however, why I would advise against the “town hall” crap that McCain proposed. He set it up so that Obama would have to cancel a bunch of his planned events to fly around to meet McCain. And Obama has money; McCain needs the “town hall” stuff to be seen.

Good show on this post. I’m not sure how digg works, and some of my posts have been accepted, but most of them don’t show. As I said in my comments below, your notion that calling it “playing the race card” trivializes it and makes it a game is great analysis and stuff we can use with editors and others.
Timr, McCain likes town hall meetings because he can clown around and he hates debates because he needs to be serious. He is a joker, and idiot, and a moron.

The only difference between McCain and Bush: McCain has an honorable war record. Bush spent his Viet War time sniffing the powder and sucking the booze! On a serious note: if Obama doesn’t get his act together, the jokester will win this one! Most people already don’t remember that Hillary was winning in the closing months of the primaries.

Sasha, you’ve relayed another Pug falsehood and that is that Obama’s got money and McCain doesn’t, which gives him this “poor pitiful me” meme that’s a crock. McCain and the Pugs have TWICE the war chest Obama has, despite his netroots dominance. You just haven’t seen it yet. You will and it will be the next best thing to a Klan celebration–count on it. Why? Because that’s all they have and despite Josh’s protestations otherwise, they have enough dough to make it stick.
Don’t think for a second that McCain needs town halls to be seen. He needs town halls to do that down-home folky “I’m white and he isn’t” thing that sets Obama up as an uppity, over-vocabularied elitist N-word–but it ain’t because they have no moolah.
