Obama Says: Pick One, James Dobson or Al Sharpton

Obama has given an interesting speech on the Bible and Christian principles and values. James Dobson, the Christian extremist who heads Focus on the Family, is all up in flames over the talk. He is especially upset that Obama pitted him with Rev. Al as an example of the variety of individuals who bear the Christian mantel. But Obama, the first Democrat to talk comfortably about the Bible and Christian faith, has come down on the real crux of the clashes among Christians, namely the literal interpretation of the Bible. Obama says there are guidelines here, not rules. He provactively and iinterestingly says that the Department of Defense can not execute its responsibilities based on the Sermon on the Mount. Interesting stuff, and devilish, if I can say that.

Of course, McCain is clueless on all things biblical, and that is one reason Dobson is without a candidate in this go around.

Looks like Dobson has started a war with Obama, a take no prisoners type of war. I have read in several places about what Dobson has been saying, and reading Obama’s quick responses, I think that Dobson is fighting out of his class.

Once you got past the painful stupidity of Dobson’s “interpretation” of the Bible, the absolute best thing about this flap was Obama’s swift response, which basically boiled down to “he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, now let’s move on.”

More like that, please. Here’s hoping Mr. and Mrs. Average American start to see what many of us have known for years: hard-right Christianity is a political movement whose methods are as malleable as any other political movement, and not a moral crusade whose ideals are based on eternal verities.

Josh, have you decided not to continue your weekly open thread?
Cause I just came across some breakin news that should put to rest once and for all the notion that the business of the US is business is wrong to rest once and for all. Here it is. Read it and weep.
