Our Long National Nightmare Is Over . . .
. . . Hillary is giving it up.
Although she has made me good and truly angry over the last couple of months, in the end, I feel a bit sorry for her. No matter who you are, giving up a dream isn’t an easy thing to do, particularly when you’ve had it within your grasp, and especially when there are thousands of people telling you, delusional though they may be, that it’s still within your grasp.
She’s never going to be president (although she’ll run in 2012 if McCain wins in November). She’s not going to be vice president, either. The Obama campaign need only to look to 1960, when JFK offered the second slot to Lyndon Johnson in full expectation that he’d turn it down, only to be stuck with a political opponent on the ticket when he accepted. I’ve seen it mentioned in a couple of places this morning that she might be offered a cabinet post, such as Secretary of HHS, but I doubt she’d take such a low-profile gig. Neither is Obama likely to make her his health-plan czar. Hillary’s best move now is to stay in the Senate, where a long and influential career awaits, if she wants it. Which we don’t know for sure right now.

Let’s be clear. The “national nightmare” has been the past 8 years of Bushco neofascist rule, an illegal war, sedition and “wealth transfer,” not a hard-fought albeit misfired campaign from one of our nation’s most capable public servants. A little perspective, please! Had Clinton’ fired Penn and listened to the other voices in her campaign after New Hampshire, Obama would have folded in March. Despite all of her shortcomings, Obama hardly blew her out–about 100 delegates, neck and neck in the popular vote ain’t no blow-out, sports fans. Sorry.
And all the meowing around here about how Hillary is old school and Obama represents this bright shiny generation shift? Partially correct. Hillary isn’t going to be president, that’s for sure, but she sure as hell has given women in the future permission to bust through the glass ceiling–an accomplishment that is every bit as groundbreaking as the possibility of having an African American president.
You might hate her, that’s clear and that’s your right. But you’re being more than a little disingenuous not giving credit where credit is due. The first woman president, which I hope we’ll see in my lifetime, will have one person and one person only to thank for her job–that’s Hillary and that’s huge. Plus she’s made Obama a better, stronger candidate in every conceivable way.
Let’s stop the bashing and move on to more important things…

I am rather disappointed in her that she stooped to such negativity. And continued a divisive campaign after the hope was gone. But yes, I can imagine she is disappointed. However, Leftcoast is right, the real nightmare has been Bush, and the prospect of worse blunders under McCain.

For what it’s worth, my post is not Hillary bashing, nor was it intended to be; if you read it that way, methinks you read something into it that isn’t there.
The nightmare to which I refer is the way Hillary conducted her campaign for the last two or three months–specifically, countenancing race-based attacks on Obama by her surrogates, and continuing to campaign, and to attempt to damage Obama, long after it should have been clear to her that she was not going to win the nomination. The fact that said nightmare is now apparently over is something we should be happy about.
Hillary’s demonstrable qualifications for the presidency don’t excuse the way she tried to get the job. She did not bring honor upon herself these last few months; she did, or caused to be done, a great deal of damage to Obama, and it can be argued that she gave a great deal of aid and comfort to McCain, which could end up extending the eight-year nightmare you describe.

” she did, or caused to be done, a great deal of damage to Obama, and it can be argued that she gave a great deal of aid and comfort to McCain, which could end up extending the eight-year nightmare you describe.” … one word covers this rant … BULLSHIT

There are nightmares and there are nightmares. As I see, JAB is right, and Lefty is right only to the extent that Bush has been a bigger nightmare. Now it looks like this is Lefty’s last chance to tell us to cool it, and stop all this “meowing” whatever that means.
I also will believe it when I hear it. The link suggests that Hillary wants to hang around to lecture Obama on healthcare.
