I’m just saying…
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve watched the McCain Misdirection America Tour take flight and have been really frustrated that neither of our “dream” candidates have taken the obvious opportunity to define McCain before he gets up and running. After all, this guy is as much bait and switch as Bush’s compassionate conservative claptrap.
One would think that Hilla and Barack would have been smart enough to seize the opportunity, if for no other reason that to answer the big question that is at the root of the Democrat’s primary dilemma–Which one is more electable? The best way to figure that one out is to see how each takes on what appears to be the next big Pug sham. Apparently, I’m not alone.
Mike Lux and Erica Payne wrote a barn burner of a post on the topic on today’s Huffpost. Money quotes:
“While John McCain is straight-talking his way into the hearts and minds of the American people, most major democratic funders are waiting to see who wins the primary. It is admittedly hard to focus on Act 2 when Act 1 is such a nail-biter, especially when at each juncture it seems like the end may be just around the corner. But it is time to decide that we can walk and chew gum at the same time. Because if we don’t define McCain now, it won’t matter who wins the primary. Yes, I know, the other guy/gal is a lightweight bong-smoking all-talk cold-calculating pms-ridden shrew (after all, the right wing media said so, right?). But you have to do it anyway, because your country needs you and because McCain really is that bad.
He is neither the moderate nor the reformer that he pretends to be. He’s wrong on Iraq, he’s wrong on health care, he’s wrong on Social Security, he’s wrong on the economy, and he’s wrong on taxes. His judges and his cabinet will be just as ideological as Bush’s. His presidency will suffer from the same intractability. His government agencies will be filled with similar political appointments. The K Street project will continue. Washington will remain a morass of self-interests incapable of meeting the grave and great challenges in front of us. All for the want of a horseshoe nail.
So here we are in 2008 — the same thing is happening as we saw happen to McCain and Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004. “
If Mike and Erica get it, why don’t Hilla and Barack? Read the rest…

Mc Cain claims to be a “maverick”, but he voted with bush 95% of the time. He left his first wife while she had cancer because he was having an affair with the trophy wife, and his military record leaves a lot to be desired. He graduated near the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy (790 out of a class of 795). He only spent 20 hours in combat, and he lost five aircraft over the course of his military career. The only reason he wasn’t kicked out of the service at that point was because of his father and grandfather. He claims he was tortured while in captivity, but there were no witnesses, and in a 1973 interview with the US News and World Report, McCain admitted himself that he volunteered to give military information in return for medical treatment even before being subjected to torture. This man is not fit to be president, and I’m sure that the 527’s are already working on their campaign ads for the general election.

Pat, I’m sure you are right about the 527s. This is revenge time for some groups, but bad news for the Democratic candidate. Democrats have never played the patriotism card and it would be a very sad commentary if we started now. The Democratic candidate will need to disavow the ad and root out the sponsors. If the candidate is Hillary, she will be ambiguous, as she was with the Obama Muslim thing, saying “as far as I know that is not true”…wink, wink. Barack will not have a choice but to denounce it in no uncertain terms. Then John Kerry will need to return the favor and stand up for McCain just as McCain stood up for him.
If we can’t beat McCain on his record, we shouldn’t be in this thing. We should not try to beat him on his personality. I see an Obama race as more issue oriented and a Clinton race as more personality based. We’ll know soon enough, but Swiftboating McCain is the wrong way to go, as I see it.

I agree that it is high time for Democrats to quit slapping each other around and go for McCain. His promises of more conflict and wars leave me chilled to the bone. He must be insane. Is that a general Republican condition these days?

Pat, while I mostly agree with you about McCain, there is absolutely no doubt that he was tortured by the NVA while he was a prisoner. His military medical records prove that. If you watch him, you can see that he can not raise his arms up past his shoulders. Its ok to dislike st john for his politics, but lets not get personal. By making a statement like you did about his being tortured, you go over the limit that should be set. Attack the policy and the politics, don’t attack the person. Your statement about whether or not st john was tortured rings to much like something from faux news, impeachment by innuendo. That is not right, stick with facts. Also no proof that the only reason the Navy kept him was because of his father, again innuendo. BTW, one of his “lost” aircraft was the result of a missile being fired accidently-from another A/C, while still on the flight deck of the USS(I know I am going to screw up the name of the ship) Oriskenny??, the resulting fire destroyed several A/C and killed many crewmembers. Film of the incident shows st john standing on the wing of his A/C and leaping over the fire. Also, lots of fighter jocks do not do very well in schools, but are good pilots. And just to be able to land an A/C on the deck of an A/C carrier, either day or night-blacked out, no lights on the ship-takes an extraordinary amount of talent.-One of the people that I went to school with flew both F-4’s and F 14’s for almost 20 years. He left 3 A/C in the ocean.(all mechanical problems, not pilot error) he is now retired as a Commander-same as a lt. col. in AF.

On May 14, 1973, John McCain gave an interview to US News and World Report in which he, in his own words, admitted that he told a vietnamese officer: “OK, I’ll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital.” This, as well as his voting history while in the senate, his philandering, and the rest of his military record are all facts, and whether it’s fair or not, the 527’s will use his own words, and his own record against him in the general.

pat, that kind of information(if provable by something more than just some comment found on the internet) is fair game, what I object to is your saying that 1-st john was not tortured, and 2-that the only reason that the Navy kept st john in the service was due to his father. Neither of those statements can be proved, innuendo has no place in a campaign. I don’t care if the repig 527 groups use that kind of bs against the dems, we-all opponents of the repigs-should damn well have better ethics than they do(watch The Daily Show this week to see and hear the political backstabbers(operatives) in their own words)

So let me get this straight.
First – Clinton sells out on his wife
Second – Bush sells out on America
And now Obama sells out on his God/Religion…
Who’s the worse of them all? (The people) For not realizing that Obama just gave up his entire life’s growth in spirituality and relationship with God, to be President. Nice work!
How can you “Believe” in someone that doesn’t believe in his own beliefs?
Michael
