St. John 1, NFL 0

Given that the Republican Party intended to exploit 9/11 to reelect Bush in 2004, it made perverse sense for them to hold their national convention as close to September 11 as they could, and in New York City at that. No convention had ever been held so late—from their beginnings in the 19th century, the conventions were generally held in July or August. In 2004, the Repug convention was held the week before Labor Day, August 30 through September 2; this year, even though the convention is being held in Minneapolis/St. Paul with no 9/11 victims’ graves in the neighborhood to dance on, it will convene in September again, starting on Labor Day, September 1.

The broadcast networks hardly cover the conventions anymore, except for the acceptance speeches. This year, John McCain will give his acceptance speech on Thursday night, September 4—and run smack into the National Football League’s now-traditional Thursday night season opener. Today, the NFL announced it would move the game up to 7:00 Eastern instead of the usual 8:30, so as not to require NBC to choose between the game and the speech. In 2004, ABC apparently asked the NFL to move the kickoff of a preseason game to accommodate Democratic convention coverage, so there’s a precedent for this. And it’s a rather heartwarming throwback, really, to the sort of old-style civic-minded journalistic ideals that have been dead for a generation, considering that an acceptance speech is a ceremonial event rather than something that generates actual news. And considering also that not a single living soul watching the game will worry that it might not be over in time to see McCain.

The cynic in me wonders if the NFL and NBC would have done the same for Obama or Hillary.

you people need to get off of the spiked kool aid and get real.
would you hire a employee with no resume. probably not, but your are all wanting to elect a president with out one. the republicans are going to use his church association against him. they will not let this go all you are going to do is elect john mccain. obama always has great hind site. he would not have voted for the war. well we dont know that he wasnt in the senate at the time. he has no ideal what he would have done . now we find out that the wonderful church he belonged to was spouting out bigotry and that he was telling his congregation that america deserved 9-11. after obama was bragging all year about being a christian, to try to rid himself of the muslim religion that some were using against him. he said he went to this church for 17 years, he was married there, his kids were baptized there. last week he was trying to say that he was not going to disown his pastor. but he never heard him say any of this. then a week later his pastor retired and obama says on the view that he would have quit going to that church had the pastor not left. hello people a little bit of hypocrisy here. he sure through his pastor under the bus. he brags he is going to do the most amazing things as president . he has not idea how to go about this in one of the debates he was asked about a committee he was on what he had accomplished. his anwser was he had only been on that committee a little over a year. and he hasnt had time to do any thing because he was running for president. evidently not a multi tasker and once again he has no resume
