Why are we afraid?
Once we had a President who told us that, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Now we have one campaign that echoes that message of hope, while the other plays on our fears, trying to persuade us that we need an all-powerful Mommy to take care of us.
The sad thing about being grown up is that we know that Mommy isn’t all powerful, and she even tells fibs sometimes. We are asked to believe in her experience, but we know the world is changing.
At the end of the day the message is straightforward. Democracy, yes. Dynasty, no. That is all we need to know.
Peace.

Ever notice that politicians don’t “lie” any more? They just misspeak, stretch the truth, exaggerate, misrepresent, distort, spin, defect the facts, obfuscate, etc. There is a whole cottage industry of words here, isn’t there.
Calling someone a misspeaker doesn’t have the same punch as calling them a liar. Duck Hillary!

John, I have been wondering over the last 7 years just why we-as a country-are so afraid. Afraid of the “other” afraid of “terrorists”, whites afraid of young black men, and on and on and on. Did we breed out the backbone of our country after we lost the Vietnam war? Why have we become so hysterical? Afraid of our shadows? Terrified by lies about what Iraq-a small country, halfway around the world-would do to destroy us . OBL won a great victory on 9-11, with the loss of 19 people, he remade the US into a shadow of himself. Torture of prisoners-euphemistically called “enhanced interrogation”, but still torture-the stealing of powers not granted by the constitution by gwb, massively increased security under the umbrella of preventing terrorism, warrantless wiretapping and other violations of the constitution, military industrial complex run amuck. Yes, OBL’s return on investment was massive. It turned us into a fearful hiding from shadows people, with a president who has milked that fear into a war where we attacked someone who was not a threat to us. We desperately need a WC or FDR type of leader, but odds are we will get a mommy authority figure, or a repig hawk who will just continue to drive the US into fascism. I see an effective end to the US in 50 years or less, thank god I won’t be here to see it. Yes, OBL has won, when we change ourselves, remake ourselves into what we are fighting, then we lose.
