“Daisy Flower” and “The Bear In The Woods” Ads Redux
As a pathetic sign of desperation, Clinton has pulled out the scare ad. And my verdict is they can’t even make a good one.
The all-time worst scare ad was LBJ’s “Daisy” and the mushroom cloud to beat up on an already defeated Barry Goldwater. (Keep in mind that Hillary was a Goldwater Girl as her first venture into politics.)
The most effective scare ad was the classic Reagan “Bear in the Woods” ad that turned it around for Reagan against Mondale. Mondale was ahead at the time, but this one, among other things did him in.
We don’t like it when Bush uses scare tactics, why should we tolerate it in a Democratic primary contest? Sad stuff.

I can’t find it yet, but Obama just took the Clinton ad and put the judgment spin on it. While it initially looks like the Clinton ad, he says that the important issue is that the person who answers the phone has the judgment to make the right decision. He then goes on to say that he has had the right judgment on Iraq from the beginning.
What I like here is another example of Obama’ quick response. This time with a zinger. I’ll post it as soon as I can find it.

As a fan of Ann Richards, this one makes me willing to do most anything to prevent the election of Senator Clinton.

Why play Billy Ball and win (even with a fulminating Deke and convicted Watergate co-conspirator like George Steinbrenner breathing down your neck) when you can play Billy Baggage and carry another stone up the mountain and… uh, lose. The value bet is always that a “good Methodist” like Hill will “assume the position.”

On AuH2O=Goldwater. I used to talk to him about 2-3 times a week while I was in Vietnam. He was a Ham radio operator for many many years, and when he got calls from MARS stations (military ham radio sites, semi official) from all over the world he would call whoever the soldier wanted to talk to and use his dime for the call. I had access to lots and lots of radios,(not from the Mars site) from UHF, to SSB, HF, scatter, and many others, on good weather nights in Vietnam, we could call him up and get a really clear signal, the guys from the various shops & the pilots and aircrews would line up to make short calls home thru him, and since I was the midnite shift chief-as an E-4 and all of 19 years old-I managed to arrange things so that at least one person in our shop could call thru to Gen Berry Goldwater(USAF Res.) or other Ham radio operators and put the call over to our dayroom where about 20-30 people would gather every nite hoping that we could get thru. We talked to many other Ham radio operators, but Gen Goldwater was always our favorite. He was not the monster that LBJ portrayed, but I think that he was too honest for politics.

Great story, timr. I worked on the Goldwater campaign as my second job out of college in Washington, DC. The first one lasted two months before I jumped at the chance to do the Goldwater thing. I almost took up ham-radio because I thought it was so cool. Goldwater’s biggest problem was he was geared up to run against JFK and never retooled. As you may recall, JFK would have had some problems in 1964, including the rumors that he was going to dump LBJ. Hmmm. May McCain have the same problem with Obama.
Does ham-radio still exist?

As I’m sure folks know, Clinton is copying Walter Mondale’s ad against Gary Hart here. It worked for Mondale, but what folks may not know is that ad set Mondale up to be beaten by Reagan with the “Bear In The Woods” ad. If, if, Clinton pulls this off, with shit like this, McCain is going to win this commander-in-chief contest on day one that she gets the nomination, if she gets it. Obama has the best answer to McBush.

Josh, you damn betcha Ham radio still exists. Just look at the next weather disaster and see who is getting the word out to people to come and assist. Ham radio operators. They also use slow scan TV, and I had heard something about 15 years ago that they were trying to get a piece of a communications satellite. The hobby is still going strong all over the world
