Where’s the beefatorium?

After watching Dr John nod out during the NBA all star game I surfed over to Pinch’s lemonade stand. The beef recall I blogged about on stupid tuesday has reached 143 million lbs.  Lotsa beef for candidates who don’t know where the entitlement beef is coming from… and Bill Keller’s crew doesn’t ID the perps. First bad actor found buried in piece is the “former record holder” (in tons of recalled beef), Thorn Apple Valley Farms.  Going by first punch rules, readers will ID this outfit as the bad guys (even get a link) but read down the page to learn that Westland owns perp Hallmark Beef.  LA Times limp weenie piece waits four graphs to ID the perp and keeps the strategic level public health threat in the context of school lunch programs. KC Star lets us know that fast fooders Jack in the Box and In ‘n Out, maybe others use the downer cow burger blend. The Washington Post online (go there and register to see it) says nothing up front about this being the largest amount of bad beef passed on to the US food supply and throws out a figure 143m pounds… this isn’t ESPN where “a buck fifty” means one hundred fifty of something. Juxtapose this with the continued long tail of self censorship on the campaign trail and we’ll likely see more distortion, more propaganda and more true lies.  Thanks to go-slow tactics the USDA says we’ve eaten most of what should have been recalled already.  One hundred forty three million pounds of burger is a 1/3 lb burger for every census counted American.

Groom, my local paper, the San Antonio Express News gave this story a front page, above the fold place today. Said 148 million pounds, told the places that it has been used locally, said it went back 2 years, and even better, it gave the name of the company in the first paragraph. Just because some “national” papers don’t come out with all the facts, doesn’t mean that local papers don’t.

Fine. But the national papers have a social responsibility to their readers as “a public trust” or the fifth estate, or whatever name is politically correct these days. You live in an area where people know what “a beef” is. My point is that the quality of the reporting and coverage is like Nuremberg 1937, whether it is cows, or candidates. Get it…
