Making a Number Two
So Multiple Choice Mitt is out of the race. Speaking to the Conservative Political Action Conference yesterday, he said, “If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign, and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be part of aiding a surrender to terror.” Which undoubtedly made the attendees all happy in their pants, given that most of them are members of the 30-percent club. (You have to consider the audience, but still if you needed any confirmation of just what a sanctimonious ass Mitt Romney really is, there you go.)
So the St. John running-mate talk can now begin. If I were a betting man (and I’m not—remember I picked the Patriots to win by three touchdowns last weekend), I’d put the mortgage payment on Huckleberry. Now that Huckleberry has the Dobson endorsement—long after his chance to actually grab the nomination has passed—putting him on the ticket would be a tasty bone for McCain to toss to the religious freaks. Despite the fact that Dobson has said he couldn’t vote in good conscience for McCain, the values of the religious right are remarkably malleable when they need to be. This endorsement, plus the inevitability of McCain, especially if Hillary, a.k.a. the Antichrist, starts looking inevitable on the Democratic side, is a signal that God will probably stop by Dobson’s garage sometime this summer and tell him that it’s OK to vote for St. John after all.
I don’t think it matters that any Democrat likely to be on the ticket would wipe the floor with Huckabee in Bentsenesque fashion during a debate. “You’re no John Kennedy” didn’t swing the 1988 election, after all. But if the Repugs are worried about that, Holy Joe Lieberman would be a good choice for St. John’s ticket, too.
Any other suggestions?
(h/t to Pandagon, who had a lot more on this the other day, including the nightmarish possibility that McCain might drop dead in office and leave the presidency to a full-blown theocrat who’s demonstrably dumber than Bush.)

As I see it, McCain is in no hurry. Who he picks will depend on who the Dems pick as a nominee. If Hillary, a smart move would be a woman candidate, although Pugs like to keep their women home and in the kitchen. Hutchinson has already been mentioned and there is Elizabeth Dole out there. Not much else who isn’t moderate/reasonable on abortion and values.
If they think they can play the war game better than the Dems, and their call for “no surrender” resonates, a big if, then why not Condi. That would confuse the hell out of the Democrats.
One other thing is clear to me, given McCain’s age, his pick will be viewed as a president-in-waiting, not just a VP, so he can’t pick someone young. To give him some balance on the economy, a long-shot, New York Giants type pick would be Meg Whitman, stepping down this year from EBay. She has Romney/Bain connections and she worked at Disney. Her high tech knowledge would appeal to the younger set, maybe, who knows. Hey, you asked.
Huck will be promised Secretary of Health and Human Services where he could have a real job to the Right’s liking.

A friend of mine whose brother is a corporate Republican tells me his brother insists it’s going to be South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, who brings all the advantages viz securing the South and christer votes Huckabee does without all the clumsy christer-craziness of Huckabee.

There is a big push to get Condi the slot. I can’t imagine that happening though.

Sasha, have you heard about the new book on the 911 commission? The parts that I have read really tear Condi down. If true, this should be a stopper even for the repigs.
