While We Were Watching the Cat Fight…

The abuses go on. Iraq is still deadly. There is conclusive, statistical proof from two independent think tanks that Bushco lied though their teeth to get us into the war. We’re teetering on a global  financial collapse, perhaps deeper and more complex than 1929. And what do our esteemed candidates and the media focus on? Provoked racism, provoked sexism and the transformation of our electoral process into a 9-month version of Survivor. They’ve crossed the line between reporting news and making news, and we’re much the poorer for it.

A little context here…we continue to be plundered by a criminal class that is so scandal-ridden that Keith Olbermann dedicates a nightly segment called “Bushed!”, which outlines 50 administration scandals. That’s right, 50. And despite the best efforts of Henry Waxman who’s stepping up the number of his investigative hearings, they’re going to get away with all of it. No consequences whatsoever for the Crawford Cowboy and the Fat Man in the Bathtub (sorry Lowell, you deserve better). That’s because at base, we’ve become petty gossip mongers, road-kill spectators; our politics a peepshow insterstitial between episodes of Lost and American Idol.

We’re more concerned about faux issues like trying to decide between the Iron Maiden and MLK’s Mini-Me than trying to right the rot that encompasses us all. Keep it up and we’re going to get Uncle Fester, along with all the moonbats that are flying around in his orbit, not to mention those that are flying around in his head. Those guys. The ones you’ve come to know and love for the past 8 years. The ones who continue to make the world a misery and a treacherous, if not lethal place to be.

Well said, and passionately said. I do disagree with your conclusion: “Keep it up and we’re going to get Uncle Fester…”

Correct me if I have misread you or read too much into what you are saying. You seem to be admonishing folks like me for not jumping on the Hillary bandwagon and seeing only righteousness in her campaign, and for making a case for Barack over Hillary. As a Hillary supporter, are you saying that any criticism of Hillary is another nail in her electability coffin?

LC and Max, you might want to take a look at this article, written locally here in San Antonio, about how the military is getting on. Looks like 2008 is going to be a very very bad year for soldiers. Is this the return of the “hollow army”?

I think you did misread this if your conclusion is that I’m admonishing you or anyone else for not jumping on the Hillary bandwagon. My concerns are much bigger than that.

Basically I believe there’s a pox on both their houses. Neither one has leveled the kind of blistering criticism that Bush deserves. Because of that Iraq, the economy, global warming, healthcare are nowhere to be found in the political dialog. The cat fight is giving Bush a free pass and he’s got a year to go.

Neither has given me the assurance that they truly understand the impact of the damage of the past 8 years, although Hillary has been tougher on Bush in her stump speech than Dr. Feelgood. I’ll take Hillary because she knows the ropes–but that’s NOT the purpose of this post or this response.

The real culprit in all of this isn’t either candidate, but us. That’s the point of the post. Bush gets away with sedition because we let him. The media gets away with tabloid journalism because we let them. Obama, Hillary and Edwards get away with whitewash platitudes because we let them. If there is any truth in politics it’s that we get the government we deserve. Given the fashion-show runway campaigns the Dems are running, we are indeed going to get Uncle Fester–unless we hang the past 8 years over his neck and over the necks of anyone with “R” after their names.

Thanks for the clarification. We, of course, is a divided w-e. It’s amazing to me how many still like Bush–about a third of us. And it’s too bad that Clinton 1 is spending is oxygen and falling asleep on the dias instead of taking Bush on. Where is Al Gore? Where is Howard Dean?

Before Bush becomes the issue, keep in mind that McCain does have a record of standing up to Bush, not our kind of standing up, but on the war, spending, torture, etc. he will be able to say that he is the candidate, not Bush. That worries me. If Hillary makes Bush the problem, McCain will make Clinton 1 the problem. Neither wins.

While I agree that too many Bush people, including himself, will go unpunished for now, I do agree with the wisdom of not resorting to impeachment proceedings. First of all it was only viable since the House went back to Democratic hands over a year ago, but resorting to impeachment in two consecutive presidencies would set a dangerous precident. If Bush were impeached, Cheney would be president, and so on and so on. If the argument is the Pugs will do this anyway next year if there is a Democrat in the White House, it is a case without any foundation, just wild spectulation, at this time. The Republicans would need to gain control of the House inorder for this to be a possibility. Not likely to happen.

So, let me get this right - to ward off a future of being impeached, all one has to do is make certain the next in the pecking order is even worse than the individual you would like to impeach. Gee, how bloody ingenious !

Everyone in this country that uses their head, for some other reason than keeping their hat off their shoulders, knew that Cheney, was the tail that wagged the dog. Years ago a mob boss in Louisiana supposedly stated, “If you cut off the head of the dog, the tail will stop”, but it is the complete opposite in this instance. Cheney should stand trial for knowingly misleading this entire nation eg: WMD, Iraq’s involvement in 9/11, the public identification of a CIA agent, his total disregard for our Constitution, the manipulation of our justice system with the help of Dick Addington , John C. Yoo and Alberto Gonzales. This whole “phucking rat pack”, should be taken out back of Fallujah and shot, but we ( the citizens of this country ) are civilized and unlike these unscrupulous disappointments to humanity, we are bound by laws that “they”, choose not to adhere to.
Leftcoast is correct, we had a task to perform and we failed to follow through, “two impeachments in a row - OH MY GAWD”, does not validate, not completing that task in my humble opinion.
By allowing that issue to slide, we can only expect more of the same. Kids shipped home in coffins, others with limbs missing or blinded and scarred beyond recognition. Fasten your seat belts people, we are in for some horrible consequences and we only have ourselves to blame. Every candidate out there should be hollering about these atrocities and naming those responsible, as for the media, “they are no longer in the building”.
We are not in a search of a president, what we need is a miracle worker. Thanks Mr. Bush and thank you Republicans everywhere.

I agree that it’s too late for impeachment, but disagree that it is too early for the Dems to take a real whack at the Pugs. For me it’s not just Bush, it’s the whole stinking mess of Pugs. The Dems have to go right at their (and Fester’s) strength which is the silly notion that Pugs are better at national security. The reason isn’t just to line up the presidency, but to influence the congressional races. One factor that doesn’t come up has to do with each candidate’s coattails. Obama might have the edge here given his endorsements by other members. But no matter, as a party, the Dems typically cave on issues with which more of the electorate agrees with them. I worry about them being susceptible to idiot consultants like Shrum, who play not to lose and consistently snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
