There is hope for us yet
Best of the Blogs started with an email list called the Ancient Thespians, for men who “would rather burn out than rust.” I am cheered by the Japan Times front page today, where, top front and center, between a snarky “China hit for alternating joint communique” (to eliminate some caveats that appear in the Japanese text) and “Senbe Kitcho admit heads long aware of label fraud” (the latest in a series of stories about Japanese food processors mislabeling food products), I read
90-year dash
FINISH
Caption below the picture reads, “HONOLULU–Tetsuo Okawara, 90, finishes 42.125 km in eight hours, 11 minutes and 56 seconds Sunday during the JAL Honolulu Marathon. Okawara, who started running marathons at age 60, was the oldest Japanese in the annual event, which is sponsored by Japanese companies led by Japan Airlines Corp.”
Like the title says, guys, there is hope for us yet.

John,
What are you talking about! I live next door to you in Tokyo, and have seen you in the flesh! While you may have a gut, compared to me, you are positively skinny!
You could probably still run 42 km. in some kind of time frame, me I would hard time with the 800 meter dash from my house to the train station!
But you are right, there is hope for us yet!
