Orwell Has Nothing on Rove

“Those who control the present control the past, and those who control the past control the future,” wrote Orwell in 1984. Rove’s theater of the absurd claim the other night on Charlie Rose that the democratic congress pushed Bushco into war is getting amazingly strong push-back not only from the usual suspects like Arianna Huffington, but insiders like Andy Card.

It will be interesting to see if Karl’s voodoo works as a private citizen without the mantle of White House power. My bet is that he’s going to be revealed as the loon that he his, and the more that he is discredited and belittled, the more ridiculous and potentially weird he’s going to become. He just might become the reckless crazy uncle of the right wing and really start naming names. Can’t wait for the book in March. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that for the better part of seven years, Bushco has been rewriting and distorting records of all kinds behind the veil of executive privilege and secrecy that makes this gang especially scary. The digitization of archives (link is a downloadable pdf) opens the door to all sorts of nasty behavior. The rewriting of the Geneva Convention, the role of habeas corpus, plus this recent assault on the facts of our invasion of Iraq are but a small part of a large scheme to recast this country as something other that what it is. January ‘09 can’t come soon enough…

The irony, of course, is that one vote got him his job. He would have been a nobody if things had turned out differently, and his scary ideas would not have been put to the test. I also think that Bush puts him up to these ideas by saying “what if…” and then Karl figures out how to get it done. I don’t think Bush is a clone here.

I wonder what Lee Atwater thinks?

Lee Atwater discovered that he was an evil shit after he got a brain tumor. I don’t think Karl is capable of that much insight.

Josh, of course your comment assumes that Bush has ideas…

Leftcoast: Not only is the White House short on ideas, the place is bereft of intelligence. Both Democrats and Republicans are constantly talking about how smart Cheney or Rove are. I seem to be the only person in America who has yet to see any sign of common sense emanating from the White House.

I, too, look forward to the day El Incompetente, Protector of the Invaders from Mexico and Coward of Crawford (Bush), fades into history. That’s 20 January 2009. I’m counting the days.

When your king is mad and has the keys to enough fire power to terminate life on earth three times over your word is law to the rest of the world irrespective of countries independent laws and past mandated treaties which the Presidents absolute superior have formally acknowledged and enshrined into the laws of his land !
Oh well history books will now record that Cold War mark two began that fateful inauguration in 2001 in a place called Washington and that new empire of the right thus created will collapse internally from a combination of excessive debts and adverse population demographics like the last great Roman Empire some 1700 years before it!
How sad the Americans have now sowed the seeds of their own self destruction in the eyes of the world, whilst destroying all democracies of the twenty first century - they once fought for some fifty odd years ago , even then “we were late to arrive”.

Whoever controls the press controls the present, and the past. We larned that from Charles “I never changed an ending by popular demand” Dickens in his “Little Dorrit” (the circumlocution officer). Newspapers, tv, MSM all have to play ball wit de White Haus in order to keep sources who are the lifeblood of their enterprise and ad revenues. Spike it or hype it… at the Tower sometimes Billy the K will kick it up to Pinch for the red light green light. Play the dupe for Rupe. Hit a slam for Graham… Remember that 1930s rag in Germany… the Voelkischer Beobachter…
