Hillary Clinton, Shell Shocked
Andrew Sullivan has an interesting take on the differences between Hill and Barry and why he thinks the choice isn’t close: Hillary suffers from conservative post-traumatic stress disorder. In a nutshell, Sullivan’s take is that Hillary has learned to fear the Right because it was ascendant when she and (Bubba) took power. That’s why she’s so painfully careful, so obviously coached and focus-tested and why she drives people like me up the wall. Here’s the most qualified candidate (absent Al Gore who won’t run) and she just can’t tell it straight.
According to Sullivan, Obama has no such fears. Growing up in a different era, he doesn’t have “liberal self-hatred and self-doubt.” No kidding. One is aspirational, the other seems to drone on without passionate convictions about anything. You tell me who’s right for the times: an extraordinarily qualified pro who seems to suffer a bit from the lack of vision/charisma thing or a relatively inexperienced firebrand who can drive us into the future? Or as Sullivan puts it the choice between “a defensive crouch or a confident engagement?” I think that’s the choice between Dem front runners and no one is not quite satisfied.
