The Slow-Drip Method

It is now clear that something truly horrendous happened in Haditha. American marines murdered about two dozen Iraqi civilians because they were home. Some of them were women and children; all of them were innocent of being an immediate danger to their killers.

Incidents like this happen in all wars and they are, thankfully, especially rare among American units. But, it is also clear that the White House and Pentagon already know exactly what happened and are releasing details a little at a time to defuse the backlash when the official report is made public. The question that needs to be asked is what role did the Bush administration's cavelier dismissal of the Geneva Conventions and its highly vocal willingness to push the limits of lawful warfare behavior have on the mindset of the participants. The distance between "bring it on" and "kill them all" is not as great as it should be.
